The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) represents the most advanced academic qualification a university can award. Candidates pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with an English Education specialization collaborate with faculty advisors to advance scholarship in language and literacy while conducting professional research. Working closely with their advisor and doctoral committee, students design a customized study plan aligned with their academic interests and career aspirations. To earn this prestigious degree, candidates must fulfill all requirements set by both the UF Graduate School and the College of Education, along with specific mandates from the School of Teaching and Learning. These include mastering four fundamental domains: Theoretical and Historical Foundations of Education, Learning Theories, Research Methodologies, and Pedagogical Principles.
This comprehensive foundation equips doctoral candidates with the expertise to generate and advance new knowledge about teaching methodologies, while applying research-backed approaches to educate diverse learners in various settings. English Education Ph.D. candidates particularly develop sophisticated understanding of literacy practices and the complex systems humans employ to interpret and articulate their experiences. After completing coursework, students must successfully pass a qualifying examination before advancing to dissertation research. This culminating project requires original, theory-driven research that contributes novel insights to the field, ultimately leading to the conferral of the Ph.D. degree.
