A formal dual degree program combines two master's degrees or pairs a master's with a JD program, resulting in two separate degrees. All formal dual degree proposals require approval from both the Graduate Council and the Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education.
Formal dual degree programs fall into two categories. The first type integrates two different academic fields, requiring students to fulfill core requirements for both while minimizing elective coursework. The second type combines two specializations within a single discipline, allowing shared core courses while maintaining distinct electives for each program.
Dual degrees must be pursued simultaneously rather than sequentially. To satisfy this condition, students must enroll in both programs for a complete academic year (three quarters or two semesters). For one-year programs, students must join the second program no later than the first admission term after completing half of their initial program's coursework.
Students have five years from initial enrollment to finish both degree programs. Graduation applications must be submitted for both programs simultaneously, with both degrees conferred at the same time.
