An art history master's degree is ideal for those seeking to develop a profound appreciation for how artistic expression and aesthetic principles evolve and influence both individuals and cultures. The program includes an optional museum studies specialization. You'll collaborate with faculty members and renowned guest artists, curators, and academics from around the world. Additionally, you'll engage in academic research on a subject of personal interest. With diverse course offerings, you'll have the freedom to explore what inspires you—whether examining the intersection of art and technology or concentrating on particular cultural contexts or artistic movements.
Although we cover various global art traditions, our program particularly highlights European, American, and Islamic art. Denver's museum resources—including the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Clyfford Still Museum, and Western Center for Conservation of Fine Arts—provide valuable hands-on opportunities for aspiring art historians. Graduate students also interact with both emerging and established artists through the University of Denver's Vicki Myhren Gallery and Madden Museum of Fine Art.
The art history master's program features intimate class settings within an intensive two-year curriculum.
Earning the degree requires completing a minimum of 56 credits, typically achieved within two years.
