The Department of Chemical Engineering provides advanced degree programs culminating in a Master of Chemical Engineering (M.Ch.E.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering. These programs aim to equip students with rigorous engineering and scientific methodologies while fostering the ability to apply these competencies for societal advancement. With diverse student interests and professional aspirations, the department emphasizes exposure to both theoretical and practical research challenges, cultivating essential engineering expertise applicable across industrial, academic, and governmental careers.

The curriculum integrates foundational chemical engineering courses, applied mathematics, specialized electives, and faculty-mentored thesis research (though a non-thesis M.Ch.E. track exists).

Housed in the Allan P. Colburn Laboratory—named for a foundational figure in the field—the department features specialized research centers including the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology (with cutting-edge catalysis equipment) and the Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics. Additional facilities support studies in renewable energy, polymer science, rheology, biochemical engineering, and other critical areas. Growing bioengineering initiatives are strengthened through collaboration with the Delaware Biotechnology Institute. Strong industry partnerships in the Delaware Valley and New Jersey complement a robust visiting scholar program that attracts global experts for short- and long-term engagements.
