Outstanding University of Delaware undergraduate English majors may qualify for the accelerated 4+1 program, enabling them to obtain both a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language within five years.
The English program provides a versatile, interdisciplinary curriculum that equips students for diverse career opportunities in fields such as business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and media production. Students develop essential skills in clear writing, persuasive communication, and critical reading - all vital attributes for professional leadership positions.
Our undergraduate English program offers adaptable course options. Students select three foundational courses (totaling nine credits) from these focus areas: Literary History, Textual Analysis and Production, and Cultural Diversity. An additional eight courses (24 credits) are chosen with guidance from departmental advisors, drawing from our extensive course offerings. Seniors complete their studies with a capstone experience, selecting from options including internships, portfolio development, symposium participation, independent research (three credits), thesis writing, or student teaching (for Education majors).
