Art History provides students with analytical perspectives on how artistic and cultural expressions have evolved throughout history and across different regions. We enhance students' visual literacy, refine their writing skills, and ignite their creativity through studying artworks, artifacts, and architectural wonders that have inspired devotion, fueled revolutions, brought joy, or provoked controversy. Nearby institutions like the UD Library, Museums and Press frequently act as hands-on learning spaces where students hone their skills as art critics and curators. Our curriculum covers artistic traditions from America (including Native American, African American, and Latin American), Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Islamic world, encompassing material culture and architectural studies. Students can pursue dual or combined majors that align with their interdisciplinary interests, such as Art Conservation, Anthropology, English, History, and various Languages, Literatures & Cultures programs. By exploring diverse artistic achievements, we encourage students to develop global perspectives.

While more than half the global population speaks multiple languages, merely 20% of Americans are proficient in a language besides English. Proficiency in foreign languages and cultural understanding provides our graduates with a professional edge, particularly valued in global commerce and specialized fields. Alumni pursue diverse careers in education, media and entertainment, public service, tourism, finance, or international trade. Some join global or nonprofit entities like the International Red Cross or World Health Organization, while others pursue graduate studies for careers in international law, diplomacy, or academia.
