To qualify for the 4+1 MA in Art History for Museum Professionals, students must be University of Delaware juniors or beyond, pursuing a BA in Art History. They need a minimum 3.0 overall GPA across 60+ credits and a 3.25 GPA in at least four Art History courses. Enrollment in or completion of ARTH301 is also required.
Admission to the graduate program depends on evaluation of several components: a writing sample, a personal statement detailing academic and professional goals, three recommendation letters (including one from an Art History faculty member), and undergraduate transcripts. The graduate admission committee may conduct interviews before finalizing decisions.
Our Art History program provides students with analytical tools to understand artistic evolution across cultures and eras. We enhance visual literacy, refine writing skills, and inspire through engagement with transformative artworks and architecture. The UD Library, Museums and Press and other local institutions serve as hands-on learning spaces for aspiring critics and curators. Course offerings span American (encompassing Native American, African American, and Latin American), European, African, Asian, and Islamic art traditions, along with material culture and architectural studies. Students can pursue interdisciplinary paths through double majors or joint programs with fields like Art Conservation, Anthropology, English, History, and various Languages, Literatures & Cultures. By exploring diverse creative expressions, we prepare students to engage thoughtfully with global cultures.
