Art History provides students with analytical perspectives on how artistic and cultural expressions have evolved throughout history and across different regions. We enhance students' visual literacy, refine their writing skills, and ignite their creativity through studying artworks, artifacts, and architectural marvels that have inspired devotion, fueled revolutions, or provoked strong reactions. Nearby institutions like the UD Library, Museums and Press frequently serve as hands-on learning spaces where students hone their skills as art critics and curators. Our curriculum covers diverse artistic traditions including American (encompassing Native American, African American, and Latin American), European, African, Asian, and Islamic art, along with material culture and architecture. Students can pursue interdisciplinary programs by combining Art History with fields like Art Conservation, Anthropology, English, History, or various Languages, Literatures & Cultures. By exploring humanity's creative legacy, we prepare students to engage meaningfully with global cultures.
Studying Chinese opens doors to a civilization with five millennia of history and connects learners to 1.36 billion speakers worldwide. As China's global significance continues to grow, proficiency in Mandarin and understanding of Chinese culture become increasingly valuable assets in professional and business sectors. Our alumni pursue diverse careers: some work as import/export specialists facilitating trade, others as policy researchers shaping strategic decisions. Graduates find opportunities in education, translation, government service, international tourism, and finance, while some pursue advanced degrees for careers in international law, diplomacy, or academia. The language skills gained through our program, especially when combined with other disciplines, also create pathways in global marketing, advertising, and media industries.
