Art History provides learners with analytical perspectives on how artistic and cultural traditions have evolved throughout history and around the globe. We enhance visual literacy, cultivate writing proficiency, and ignite creativity through engagement with artworks, artifacts, and structures that have inspired devotion, fueled social change, brought joy, or provoked controversy. Nearby institutions like the UD Library, Museums and Press frequently serve as hands-on learning spaces where students hone their skills as art analysts and exhibition organizers. Our curriculum covers diverse artistic traditions including American (encompassing Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian, and Islamic art, along with material culture and architectural studies. Students can pursue interdisciplinary programs that complement their dual passions, pairing Art History with fields like Art Conservation, Anthropology, English, History, or various Languages, Literatures & Cultures. By exploring humanity's rich artistic heritage, we prepare students to engage thoughtfully with global cultures.
