The Department of Art Conservation stands as a global pioneer dedicated to training expert conservators proficient in assessing, analyzing, restoring, and safeguarding cultural artifacts. The department offers both undergraduate and master's programs in art conservation—the latter jointly administered with Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library—alongside a multidisciplinary doctoral program in Preservation Studies.
Bridging artistic, humanistic, and scientific disciplines, an art conservation bachelor's degree equips students for advanced studies in material culture preservation, historic conservation, museum curation, archival sciences, and allied domains. As one of just five such programs nationwide, it provides hands-on experience with premier conservators and researchers while examining diverse cultural artifacts—from ancient archaeological finds to Indigenous and modern works—drawn from UD's Special Collections & Museum and global repositories. For over fifty years, our alumni have conserved landmark objects ranging from foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence and Emancipation Proclamation to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Forbidden City ornamentation, and recently, the George Floyd Memorial. Their contributions unite communities, deepen cross-cultural appreciation, and cultivate both wisdom and inspiration.
