Qualification Requirements
Students with mathematics or natural science backgrounds may be admitted into a certain area of concentration but will be required to take undergraduate engineering courses, which cannot be counted towards graduate degree requirements. The student's advisory committee will determine appropriate undergraduate courses required to ensure proficiency in engineering fundamentals and design. The student must meet grade point requirements set forth by the Graduate School.
Applicant must hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or equivalent is recommended for admission into the MS program and a GPA of 3.5 or equivalent is recommended for admission into the PhD program.
Applicants must submit official transcripts in sealed envelopes covering all previous undergraduate and/or graduate work.
Three letters of recommendation are required, preferably from faculty with whom the candidate has worked with or taken course(s). There is no specific form for the letters of recommendation. Letters are uploaded directly by the referees as part of the online application.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are no longer required for M.S. and Ph.D. applicants (voted by CEE faculty 12/07/2020).
A personal statement is also required. This should explain the reason why you want to go to graduate school and what area of concentration you are interested in.
International applicants must submit their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores in order for the Graduate School to release their application to the department. Minimum scores for both the MS degree and PhD degree are: paper-based >500, computer-based >213 and internet-based >80.
If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you need an average overall band score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable.
