The Master of Fine Arts in Puppetry program equips students to emerge as innovative visionaries in the Puppet Arts field, demanding at least 60 credit hours. Coursework immerses students in theoretical foundations, historical contexts, creative development, scriptwriting, design principles, mechanical techniques, material construction methods, and diverse puppetry performance styles. Hands-on production work builds real-world skills in performance approaches, material applications, and show development processes. This three-year graduate program concludes with a capstone MFA thesis project.
Previous thesis projects for the Puppetry MFA have encompassed: Solo Creator works involving design, construction, performance and directing duties, Team-Based Creator productions with shared responsibilities among multiple candidates for design, building, scripting, direction and/or performance, Design initiatives supporting Connecticut Repertory Theatre shows, Film or digital media presentations, and Site-specific performances designed for unconventional venues ranging from public spaces to traditional theaters.
