Thorough pre-service training plays a vital role in ensuring new educators' early career success. The effectiveness and depth of the preparatory program significantly influences both teachers' performance and their longevity in the profession. The five-year IB/M program offers a demanding, carefully structured curriculum that delivers an ideal blend of experiences, enabling students to develop expertise in their subject matter, pedagogical understanding, and practical skills necessary to become competent, impactful educators for diverse learners.
This five-year IB/M program starts with students fulfilling a minimum of two years of general education and subject-specific coursework before gaining admission to the Neag School of Education. After entering the IB/M program, students typically spend two years focusing on their academic major and professional teacher training, culminating in a Bachelor's degree in education. The subsequent graduate year involves advanced professional studies leading to a Master's degree in either Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Psychology. Fulfilling all program requirements qualifies graduates for Connecticut state teaching certification.
