The initial success of new educators is significantly influenced by their pre-service training. The thoroughness and rigor of the preparation program play a key role in shaping both teacher effectiveness and career longevity. The five-year IB/M program offers a demanding, carefully structured curriculum that gives students an ideal mix of experiences to develop expertise in their subject area, understanding of instructional methods, and the hands-on skills necessary to become a successful and impactful teacher for every learner.
This five-year IB/M program starts with students finishing a minimum of two years of general education and subject-specific coursework before entering the Neag School of Education. After admission to the IB/M program, students typically spend two years focusing on their major and professional teacher training, culminating in a Bachelor's degree in education. The subsequent year involves graduate-level professional studies, leading to a Master's degree in either Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Psychology. Fulfilling all program requirements leads to a recommendation for Connecticut state teacher certification.
