Thorough preparation before entering the classroom plays a vital role in new educators' early career success. The effectiveness and rigor of the training program significantly influence both teachers' performance and their longevity in the field. The five-year IB/M program offers an intensive, carefully structured curriculum that delivers an ideal blend of learning opportunities, enabling students to develop expertise in their subject area, pedagogical understanding, and hands-on skills necessary to become competent, impactful educators for diverse learners.
This five-year IB/M program starts with students fulfilling general education and subject-specific coursework during their first two years before gaining admission to the Neag School of Education. After entering the IB/M program, participants typically spend two years focusing on their academic major while completing professional teacher training to earn their Bachelor's degree in education. The final year involves graduate-level studies in either Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Psychology, culminating in a Master's degree. Fulfilling all program requirements qualifies graduates for Connecticut state teaching certification.
