UConn's Marine Sciences Bachelor's programs aim to stimulate your intellect and push you academically. The curriculum foundation combines marine biology, chemistry, geology, and physics courses. Through advanced Marine Sciences electives and faculty-guided independent research, students focus on specific marine science specialties. Their scientific education is strengthened with ocean policy, law, economics, and resource management coursework. This quantitative, hands-on program emphasizes real-world experience from the first semester onward, with many courses involving fieldwork in diverse regional marine ecosystems. You'll gain practical knowledge through immersive experiences that literally immerse you in the subject matter. Similar to an intensive environmental sciences degree, this program concentrates on studying the marine environment that dominates our planet's surface.
Students can choose between a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Marine Sciences. Both degrees have led graduates to various careers. While there are no strict distinctions, BS students often pursue scientific careers or advanced science degrees, while BA students typically apply marine science knowledge to management or policy work. The BS requires more quantitative coursework, whereas the BA includes additional social science classes related to ocean studies.
