Maritime Studies is an adaptable yet structured major that allows students to tailor their education to diverse academic and professional aspirations. Based on their chosen specialization, students can pursue careers in maritime services, heritage tourism, or advanced studies in fields like maritime history, public history, English, journalism, marine policy, cultural resource management, urban planning, education, law, or business.
The Maritime Studies Program leverages the distinctive coastal setting of UConn-Avery Point along Long Island Sound, along with its wealth of marine educational assets and research initiatives such as the UConn Sea Grant Institute, National Undersea Research Center, Long Island Sound Resource Center, and Marine Sciences Department. Students also benefit from internship and research collaborations with regional partners like Mystic Seaport, a globally renowned maritime museum and research institution. Additional details and sample curriculum plans for each specialization are available in the left-hand menu.
