The Middle East frequently appears in political discourse and remains a persistent focus of news coverage. Yet, for many, the region retains an air of enigma. This stems partly from widespread mischaracterizations of its cultures and inhabitants, compounded by the relentless pace of political changes, particularly in recent years. This certificate program aims to equip students with a nuanced grasp of regional politics that transcends media clichés and partisan narratives. Participants will explore contemporary scholarship examining the intricate relationships between Middle Eastern societies, governments, and global actors. Although administered by the Political Science department, the program incorporates cross-disciplinary offerings from fields like Geography, History, Modern Languages, Religious Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. Advanced Political Science courses with Middle Eastern concentrations may also apply. This multidisciplinary framework introduces diverse analytical lenses while teaching students to examine how various political dimensions intersect across the region.
