The Environmental Stewardship of Indigenous Lands (ESIL) certification offers a distinctive academic pathway at the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), with "Indigenous" encompassing Native American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hawaiian Native communities. This program equips students with specialized training to merge environmental conservation interests with cross-cultural communication skills. Through comprehensive education, hands-on internships, and career support, ESIL prepares participants to address ecological challenges affecting both tribal and non-tribal communities.
This certification welcomes undergraduate students (full-time or part-time), post-baccalaureate scholars, and transfer students from CU Denver and other institutions. Though available to all academic disciplines, ESIL particularly benefits those pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees. The program enhances professional development through practical experiences, including internships and specialized workshops. These extracurricular components introduce students to vital concepts like tribal sovereignty, environmental regulations, intercultural communication, and traditional ecological wisdom (TEK). Participants apply both STEM principles and cultural understanding during internship placements, serving as tribal liaisons with collaborating organizations.
