The Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) program trains students in spatial, technical, and design disciplines within the preservation field, covering architecture, cultural landscapes, planning, building technology, project management, documentation, and representation. CU Denver's Dana Crawford Preservation Program delivers an MSHP degree that readies graduates for modern preservation careers. Students gain skills to conserve historic structures while exploring landscape conservation, cultural heritage protection, urban gentrification effects, and preservation's role in affordable housing solutions.
The program allows students to customize their education through independent studies, certificate options, and university-wide electives. Recognizing preservation's interdisciplinary nature, the curriculum integrates architecture, landscape studies, urban planning, policy, construction technology, project leadership, documentation methods, and cultural interpretation.
This 45-credit Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) typically spans 15-18 months (three semesters plus optional summer study). Students develop expertise in conserving historic sites while examining broader themes like landscape-scale conservation, protecting marginalized communities' heritage, urban renewal challenges, and preservation's connection to housing affordability. The program increasingly addresses the critical intersection between environmental sustainability and historic conservation in our changing climate.
Students admitted into this program must have completed a bachelor’s degree before can be admitted to this program.
Minimum TOEFL IBT Total Score: 79; TOEFL Sub scores (Reading: 18, Listening: 17, Speaking: 20, Writing: 17).
Minimum IELTS Overall Band Score: 6.5, IELTS Sub scores as 5.5.
Minimum PTE Academic Score Accepted: 58.
