The Health & Behavioral Sciences (HBS) PhD program develops future leaders in population health research, combining insights from social, behavioral, and health sciences. Our interdisciplinary approach examines health outcomes, behaviors, and healthcare systems. Recent student research has explored diverse topics including HIV/AIDS dynamics, healthcare delivery environments, social network influences on health practices, medical ethics, cognitive biases in health decisions, social-biological health connections, and factors driving health inequities. Our alumni emerge as experts in analyzing the root causes of health disparities across populations.
New cohorts begin each fall, completing two years of core coursework alongside peers. The curriculum emphasizes behavioral theories, study design, statistical analysis, qualitative research, and population health influencers. Following coursework, students typically dedicate 1-2 years to developing dissertation proposals under faculty committee guidance. After prospectus approval, most students complete their dissertation research within another 1-2 years with ongoing committee support. Full-time students generally graduate in 4-6 years. The program strongly emphasizes faculty-mentored research opportunities alongside independent dissertation and academic project work throughout the doctoral journey.
A master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or substantial research experience, is recommended for admission to the PhD program. Students applying without prerequisites may be admitted but will be required to complete appropriate courses before being permitted to complete the core curriculum.
