CU Denver provides two distinct pathways in its civil engineering PhD program: The Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering is a specialized technical degree designed for those holding an undergraduate engineering degree, while the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering Systems offers greater flexibility for students with backgrounds in fields like science, mathematics, or economics. This collaborative program is offered in partnership with the University of Colorado Boulder.
The civil engineering systems doctoral track operates under different guidelines compared to the four conventional doctoral programs, enabling more cross-disciplinary research opportunities. This pathway can serve as the next step after completing a Master of Engineering degree.
The CU Denver College of Engineering, Design and Computing is committed to delivering a thorough engineering education across undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. Our faculty engage in research spanning five key areas: civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and computer science and engineering. Letters of recommendation two are required, except for Bioengineering, which requires three letters of recommendation.
Official GRE scores the college has removed the evaluation of GRE scores for admission decisions.
Students must hold an earned master's degree before they can be admitted to a doctoral program in the Department of Civil Engineering, there is no direct admission from a bachelor's program to the doctoral program. However, a student enrolled in a master's program may apply for the doctoral program before the master's degree is granted, as long as the master's degree is conferred before they enroll as a doctoral student at CU Denver.
