The Spanish major's career track opens doors to opportunities in both government and private sectors, domestically and internationally. Proficiency in languages proves valuable across diverse fields including business, industry, commerce, civil service, law, library science, media, science, economics, healthcare, and social sciences. This program also prepares students to teach general business subjects in bilingual and conventional educational settings. (Note: Those seeking Spanish teaching certification in public schools should contact the department about the undergraduate language licensure program.)
Degree requirements may be periodically updated by the academic department, with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences retaining authority to approve exceptions or substitutions when warranted. Students are strongly encouraged to consult regularly with their major and CLAS advisors to ensure their study plans remain optimal.
The Modern Languages Department encompasses Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. While Spanish is the only major offered, minors are available in Chinese Studies, French, Linguistics, and Spanish. Specialized certificates include Chinese for International Business, Spanish for International Business, and Spanish for Healthcare Professions. Students must declare their major before their final semester. The department encourages majors and minors to incorporate study abroad into their CU Denver degree program—consult a departmental advisor about international opportunities. Study abroad credits typically apply toward major/minor requirements, but students should verify credit transfer with an advisor before enrolling in overseas programs. Upper-division courses taken abroad in Chinese, French, German, or Spanish are governed by specific study abroad and transfer credit regulations.
