The Combined BA/MA (4+1) program in Sociology offers a structured, accelerated academic pathway, equipping students for either direct entry into master's-level careers or further doctoral studies. Admission to this competitive BA/MA program is reserved for exceptional students capable of handling an intensive curriculum. Participants select one of four culminating project options to complete their master's degree: a 6-credit thesis, a 3-credit applied experience with a 3-credit paper, an approved fifth graduate elective (totaling 15 elective credits) with a 3-credit report, or an extended coursework track featuring 18 elective credits (with up to 9 credits outside Sociology) plus a final portfolio showcasing the student's best work. The program features four specialization tracks (Crime, Law & Deviance; Health & Society; Family & Social Services; and Community & Urban Sociology) for those pursuing focused career paths.
These academic requirements may be periodically updated by the department, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences maintains discretion to approve exceptions or substitutions when warranted. Students are strongly encouraged to consult regularly with their major advisor, graduate advisor, and CLAS advisor to ensure their study plans meet current standards.
Sociology examines group dynamics, social institutions, and human behavior through scientific methods. BA graduates pursue diverse careers across sectors including healthcare, business, government, criminal justice, and education, holding positions such as administrators, HR professionals, policy experts, consultants, educators, social workers, and legal professionals.
