The 5-year combined BA/MA economics program enables eligible undergraduates to enroll in graduate-level economics courses that count toward both degrees. Students can apply up to 12 graduate ECON credits earned during their bachelor's studies toward their master's degree, potentially completing both programs within five years. Those who choose not to continue with the MA after earning their BA will keep their undergraduate degree and all associated credentials.
These academic requirements may be periodically updated by the department, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences maintains the authority to approve exceptions when warranted. Students are strongly encouraged to consult regularly with both their Economics faculty advisors and CLAS Advisor to ensure their study plans meet current requirements.
Economics examines human decision-making across market and non-market environments. Its analytical framework offers valuable insights into diverse areas including public policy, international finance, investment strategies, and banking. Beyond traditional applications, economic principles now inform understanding of healthcare systems, legal frameworks, environmental challenges, political processes, and even sports management. The discipline's comprehensive training makes economics graduates highly sought after across industries and government sectors. An economics degree also serves as exceptional preparation for advanced studies, with research showing it's particularly valued by top-tier business and law programs.
