The master's program equips students with expertise in communication studies while enhancing their skills to assess intricate communication scenarios. Designed for two primary audiences: (a) individuals aiming to pursue a PhD, whether at CU-Boulder or elsewhere, and (b) those seeking careers in various sectors (including corporate, government, nonprofit, and community organizations). Candidates who wish to transition into the department's PhD program after earning their master's must submit a new application for admission.

The master's degree follows all CU-Boulder graduate school regulations concerning residency, degree completion timelines, and transfer credit limits. Students can fulfill program requirements through either a thesis or comprehensive examination.

Qualification Requirements

For admission to the MA program, a BA degree or the equivalent is required. Special attention is given to grades in the major, and in the last 2 years of undergraduate study. A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 (out of 4.00) is required, with most admitted students having a much higher overall GPA. Although there is no minimum GRE scores, typically, students are not admitted without a minimum Verbal Score of 156.

University Requirement: Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree. Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. IELTS: 6.5, TOEFL ibt: 75, TOEFL pbt: 550.
