Standing out from other academic departments nationwide, CU-Boulder's Spanish and Portuguese Department provides a distinctive Ph.D. in Spanish featuring three specialized tracks: Medieval and Early Modern Hispanic Literatures, Peninsular Literature, and Latin American Literature. This doctoral program delivers an intellectually challenging yet adaptable curriculum aimed at enhancing students' understanding of Iberian and Latin American literary traditions and cultural contexts. Our professors maintain active research agendas across diverse subjects spanning the entire spectrum of Peninsular and Latin American studies - from women's leadership in medieval Spain to outlaw culture in Latin American history, ranging from Cervantes' masterpieces to modern writers such as Roberto Bolaño. CU-Boulder fosters close mentorship between faculty and students, actively supporting individual scholarly pursuits.
Applicants must:
Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average.
All international applicants are required to meet a minimum standard of English proficiency.
