Our mathematics department boasts a distinguished graduate faculty of 27 members, recognized for their excellence. Their research spans diverse fields including algebra, algebraic geometry, mathematical analysis, combinatorics and Lie theory, differential equations, differential geometry, mathematical logic and foundations, number theory, probability theory, topology, and related disciplines. The department regularly welcomes visiting academics and postdoctoral researchers, fostering a vibrant seminar culture with many student-led discussions. Our curriculum features rotating courses in core areas like algebra, analysis, topology, geometry, foundations, and number theory, complemented by specialized topics courses that evolve annually based on faculty and student interests. Collaborative opportunities extend across campus to departments such as Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, including joint graduate degree advising. We maintain strong academic ties with Colorado State University and other Front Range institutions through shared seminars. With about 60 graduate students, our program offers exceptional research prospects, including a dedicated summer research initiative for first-year students.
Applicants must have demonstrated mathematical maturity and accomplishment roughly at the level of a successful mathematics major at CU Boulder. Applicants must also demonstrate mathematical potential: success in courses in advanced calculus and abstract algebra help demonstrate this potential.
