The International Affairs Program (IAFS) provides an interdisciplinary undergraduate certificate in Arctic studies, working in partnership with the Program in Nordic Studies (SCAN), the Program in Russian Studies (RUSS), the Department of Geography (GEOG), the Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS), the Department of Anthropology (ANTH), the Department of Ethnic Studies (ETHN), and research organizations including the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR).
This program equips students to tackle urgent environmental, political, and cultural challenges in the Arctic. Serving as a key area for observing climate change impacts, the Arctic spans three continents, encompassing regions of Canada, Greenland (Denmark), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, and the United States. Its diverse population includes numerous indigenous communities with rich ethnic, linguistic, and sociopolitical traditions. The Arctic is a focal point for global, regional, and national concerns, from territorial disputes and security issues to economic development and resource management. Additionally, the region's unique environment and cultures have inspired significant artistic and cultural expressions by both residents and visitors throughout history.
