The Master of Arts in Sociology program caters both to students seeking a terminal master's degree and those planning to pursue doctoral studies. The curriculum emphasizes social inequality, with faculty expertise spanning urban communities, healthcare, racial/ethnic studies, and gender/sexuality research. Our department values diversity, attracting students nationwide and globally, while fostering a warm, collaborative environment.
Several MA pathways are available:
PhD candidates without prior master's degrees automatically earn an MA during their doctoral studies - prospective PhD students should apply directly to that program.
Current UC sociology undergraduates may qualify for the accelerated BA/MA (41) program, completing their master's in just one extra year with no thesis requirement.
We also provide a standalone one-year MA option that similarly doesn't require a thesis.
