The Master of Arts in Art Education is an innovative summer-intensive graduate program tailored for artists and educators dedicated to expanding access to exceptional arts education across diverse environments such as schools, museums, galleries, and community organizations.

Drawing on the creative leadership of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), this program equips current and aspiring educators with the tools to tackle evolving challenges in the field of art education.

Structured for completion in four semesters, the program features two immersive 4-week summer sessions on campus, supplemented by online coursework. This summer-focused approach is specifically designed to align with educators' schedules, allowing for concentrated study during their typical off-teaching months.

The program's curriculum emphasizes three fundamental pillars:

MAKING serves as the cornerstone of artistic research and practice. This creative process encompasses idea development, meaningful art production, educational design, and fostering impactful connections. Participants will engage in various making experiences, from documenting their learning journeys visually to exploring both contemporary and traditional art techniques in studio courses, while also integrating artistic and research methodologies through arts-based research (ABR). These activities demonstrate comprehensive, modern approaches to arts learning.
CONNECTING focuses on knowledge creation and building strategic alliances. A key objective is broadening students' awareness of contemporary art education possibilities by exposing them to local artistic resources and opportunities. Learners will forge new connections between concepts, artistic experiences, institutions, and individuals—relationships that can revitalize professional practice and potentially reshape future careers in art education.
LEADING represents the ultimate goal of program completion. Through transformative learning experiences, mentorship, and professional networking, the program cultivates insightful, forward-thinking art educators capable of shaping the future of arts instruction. Graduates emerge as creative leaders uniquely equipped to leverage art's potential for addressing contemporary challenges and driving meaningful change.
