This field applies fundamental microscopic physical principles to understand how vast collections of electrons, atoms, or molecules behave collectively. Despite the simplicity of individual particle interactions, their collective behavior frequently exhibits intricate phenomena and unexpected emergent properties like superconductivity, magnetic effects, and topological states. These cooperative effects also give rise to complex non-equilibrium behaviors and dynamic processes in both quantum and classical material systems.

Qualification Requirements
The minimum required GPA for graduate study is 3.0. Applicants should take the General GRE, and are strongly encouraged to take the Physics GRE subject area test for international applicants. Applicants without Physics GRE subject area test scores must provide other evidence of outstanding achievement and promise. There are no minimum required GRE scores for admission. Instead, we consider your scores, overall record, and letters of recommendation to make the admission decision.
