The Doctor of Philosophy in Music with a musicology specialization offers an in-depth curriculum exploring music's historical, literary, and philosophical dimensions, building upon master's-level knowledge. The program covers specialized topics like performance traditions, American musical heritage, theoretical evolution, gender studies in music, global music traditions, and related disciplines.
Students must also pursue substantial coursework in a complementary secondary field while developing proficiency in piano, music theory, and two foreign languages.
Degree completion requires an original research dissertation. Each student's academic path is tailored through consultation with their faculty advisor, cognate specialist, and graduate studies director.
