African studies introduces learners to subjects covering African culture, literature, history, geography, philosophy, sociology, politics, and economic development across the continent. While the curriculum examines Africa as a whole, students may, with faculty guidance and available expertise, specialize in specific regions or disciplines. Some may choose to concentrate particularly on history, economics, political science, or literature.
The African studies certificate courses also help non-major undergraduates meet general education requirements, such as foreign language, humanities, and literature. For example, those interested in Swahili can take courses ranging from beginner language classes to advanced Kiswahili culture and literature studies, accumulating at least 30 credits. Certificate candidates complete 30 credit hours, which may include 15 credits of foundational language instruction plus additional courses from the Department and other University departments. This program suits students seeking to enhance their primary field of study with specialized knowledge of African studies.
