This English major specialization, combined with a Bachelor's or Master's in Secondary Education, prepares you for a career teaching English Language Arts at the secondary level while enhancing your employment prospects. The curriculum delivers comprehensive literary knowledge and methods for analyzing literature and culture, alongside training in polished stylistic, analytical, and creative writing techniques. As part of the Secondary Education major, students can explore drama and journalism studies, since secondary English teachers frequently oversee school theater productions or advise student publications like newspapers and yearbooks. This program is specifically structured to complement a Secondary Education major through UC's College of Education, Criminal Justice, & Human Services (CECH), minimizing additional coursework needed for a dual major.
This undergraduate program caters to students aiming to complete a Bachelor's in English with an English Education focus, then pursue UC's graduate Secondary Education program to obtain a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction along with teaching certification. Participants will meet all College of Arts & Sciences requirements. Important note: Those pursuing a double major in English and Secondary Education with an English Language Arts concentration should list English Education as their secondary major (MAJ-ENGL) and Secondary Education (through the College of Education) as their primary major.
