The Department of Visual Arts (DoVA), part of the Humanities Division at the University of Chicago and located in The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, proudly presents its Master of Fine Arts program. This unique MFA stands out for its emphasis on exploring connections between diverse contemporary art practices and fostering interdisciplinary discussions across the University. Our faculty represents a wide range of specialties and career stages, united by their dedication to teaching and active participation in departmental dialogues while maintaining their own creative practices. Students in our program specialize in various mediums including sculpture, photography, painting, installation, performance, video, and digital media. Admission decisions prioritize portfolio quality along with demonstrated enthusiasm for this cross-disciplinary approach within an academic setting. Our primary goal is to nurture students' artistic development and equip them with skills for lifelong creative practice. This involves guiding students to examine not only the aesthetic dimensions of their work but also its theoretical, social, and historical contexts.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
