The Committee on the Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science (CHSS) is a University of Chicago graduate program enabling students to pursue M.A. and Ph.D. degrees focusing on science's historical, philosophical, and social dimensions. While faculty expertise spans diverse areas, CHSS specializes in the history and philosophy of biology and psychology, medical and psychiatric history, statistical and probability history, science sociology and anthropology, plus communication and book history. A key emphasis lies on human sciences history. Through partnership with Berlin's Max Planck Institute for History of Science, CHSS provides an exchange initiative allowing graduate students to undertake international research in broadly defined human sciences history.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
