The University of Chicago pioneered Russian studies among American institutions. Samuel Harper, whose father served as the University's inaugural president, became a leading Russian scholar and established what is now among the globe's most comprehensive Russian collections in the University Library. Students have opportunities to participate in faculty-led research initiatives, including investigations into Russia's economic and material culture between 1600 and 1725. Many program participants enhance their studies through immersive Russian language programs abroad. The curriculum develops students' Russian language proficiency for advanced research, provides understanding of relevant social sciences applied to Russian contexts, and delivers comprehensive education in specialized areas of Russian history, political systems, economic structures, or related disciplines.
