The Mathematics Department fosters a research-rich environment while delivering thorough education in mathematics and applied mathematics for both undergraduate and graduate students. Students can pursue either a BA or BS in mathematics, with options including an applied mathematics BS or a mathematics BS with an economics focus. Those majoring in other disciplines have the opportunity to complete a mathematics minor, with details provided after the major descriptions. The mathematics and applied mathematics degree requirements reflect the department's educational philosophy, designed to build cumulative mathematical knowledge while addressing the evolving nature of the field and preparing students for academic careers in mathematics. Each bachelor's program aims to enhance students' understanding of contemporary mathematics and its connections to other sciences (BS) or arts (BA). Specific requirements implementing these educational goals are outlined below. Students should be aware that degree requirements may be adjusted with valid justification; modification requests must be submitted in person to the undergraduate studies director or departmental advisors. Note that only one undergraduate degree can be awarded by the Mathematics Department.
