The Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program offers an interdisciplinary approach for students seeking to explore key topics across social sciences and humanities by thoroughly examining the history, cultures, economies, governance, and ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean. Beyond acquiring specialized knowledge of a region deeply connected to Chicago and the U.S., LACS students cultivate advanced language abilities, research techniques, and analytical thinking—with many undertaking extended study or fieldwork in Latin American nations. Degree requirements encompass: academic coursework, Spanish or Portuguese language competency, hands-on learning experiences designed to enhance understanding of Latin American and Caribbean viewpoints while strengthening cultural adaptability, plus a senior-year BA colloquium and culminating project that fosters independent, innovative, and thorough investigation. Annually, students select from numerous cross-disciplinary courses while benefiting from personalized guidance from committed faculty. The Center for Latin American Studies enriches the curriculum with annual public programming that strengthens academic networks. Additionally, the program highlights Chicago's vibrant Latin American influences and equips graduates for professional paths in public service, media, legal fields, commerce, education, nonprofits, or scholarly research.
