Recognized as a global pioneer in fundamental chemical studies, UChicago's Chemistry Department secures more National Science Foundation grants than any other chemistry program nationwide. Sixteen Chemistry Nobel laureates have been connected to UChicago as professors, scholars, or alumni. Currently, two National Medal of Science recipients serve on the chemistry faculty. The field of chemistry explores matter's creation, makeup, and arrangement, along with the dynamic principles governing its changes. The Chemistry B.A. and B.S. programs establish comprehensive grounding in the discipline's three core areas: inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Analytical chemistry, frequently considered a distinct field, is integrated into the curriculum. Both degree tracks address experimental and theoretical approaches while highlighting their interconnected nature. While both degrees ready students for chemistry careers, the B.S. provides a more rigorous academic path. The B.A. delivers substantial chemistry training while allowing greater flexibility for electives and cross-disciplinary exploration in fields like biochemistry, biophysics, chemical physics, geochemistry, pre-medical studies, and education.
