Physics aims to uncover the basic principles or natural laws that shape our universe and utilize these principles to understand both simple and intricate systems. The department provides degree programs in physics, astrophysics physics, and applied physics. The applied physics major serves as excellent training for both industry careers and advanced academic pursuits.

The Physics Department grants Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, along with an undergraduate minor and a combined B.S./M.S. program.
The applied physics major now includes a specialized track in computational physics.
Physics undergraduates enjoy abundant research opportunities, with applied physics students collaborating across Engineering, Chemistry, and Physics departments.
Through the senior thesis option, students can engage in deeper professional research collaborations with faculty.
UCSC's Cal Teach initiative facilitates student outreach, provides academic guidance, and coordinates teaching internships for Science Education students.
