Established in 1969, the community studies program became a trailblazer in hands-on learning, with its community-centered approach being replicated across numerous academic institutions. It also led the way in tackling social justice issues, particularly those stemming from racial, economic, and gender disparities in society.

This program allows students to blend classroom and real-world experiences. On campus, they take specialized courses and a foundational curriculum that equips them to recognize, evaluate, and contribute to platforms for social justice initiatives, nonprofit advocacy, policy development, and social entrepreneurship. Off campus, students dedicate six months to engaging with and assessing the operations of a social justice organization - a hallmark experiential component of the program.

Academic and Research Pathways
Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies
The intensive fieldwork component provides a prime platform for original research bridging theoretical frameworks and practical applications in social justice.

This framework encompasses both tangible and intangible dimensions. Justice implies equitable treatment - not just equal distribution but fair consideration. Health represents both a condition of wellness (examining how wellness is allocated) and the potential to foster health improvements across personal, communal, and systemic levels. Here, health justice means equitable access to healthcare services and equal chances for disease prevention, wellness enhancement, and suffering reduction for all populations. Our emphasis lies on the dynamic between systemic frameworks and individual action, official and grassroots influence, and contrasting narratives that emerge during community-driven health equity efforts.
