The Materials Department at UC Santa Barbara was founded on a core principle: fostering research through collaborative, interdisciplinary academic settings. This philosophy has become a defining characteristic of the Department. Within UC Santa Barbara's Materials program, teamwork and mutual support are standard practice, while education remains the top priority.

Our distinguished faculty provides accredited doctoral programs (Ph.D.) in Materials. Beyond offering extensive research and learning possibilities, the Department delivers interdisciplinary courses that explore fundamental concepts: the laws governing material development and transformation, methods for analyzing material structures and properties, and computational approaches for precise material engineering and evaluation.

The Materials Department strongly advocates for diversity among students and researchers, actively guiding individuals from all walks of life in their academic and career growth. The Department upholds the University of California's Diversity statement(link is external), which highlights the value of educating varied populations. We recognize that diverse research groups enhance our capacity for innovation and effective problem-solving.
