The UCSB Linguistics Department's graduate program emphasizes uncovering fundamental, theoretically important insights about linguistic structures found across global languages. Key areas of study include how cognitive processes and usage shape language evolution over time, and how these structures serve interactional, social, and cultural functions - with particular emphasis on analyzing language in natural contexts. The program fosters comprehensive linguistic understanding by exposing students to diverse language structures worldwide. This approach is vital for recognizing both universal language traits and their countless variations. The curriculum covers all core linguistics disciplines, with specialized offerings in functional/typological theory, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, language preservation, sign language studies, and sociocultural linguistics. The department boasts exceptional expertise in numerous world languages and dialects.
Students entering the program have typically completed a linguistics B.A. or the equivalent of a linguistics minor with a major in a related area, such as anthropology, psychology, or language, with a minimum grade-point average of 3.5
TOEFL scores 550 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 80 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Overall Band score of 7 or higher (only required if English is not the applicant's native language).
