Classics explores the rich heritage of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations in their entirety: encompassing their languages (Greek and Latin), literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical thought, and artistic achievements. This field connects us to our origins and helps define our contemporary identity. Modern concepts like citizenship, democracy, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships often trace back to ancient traditions and systems.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, rigorous, and enjoyable academic experience while equipping students with valuable career skills. Mastering ancient languages adds intellectual depth to humanities education. Alumni pursue diverse paths as archivists, legal professionals, advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business strategists. Their expertise in linguistics, analytical reasoning, and communication is sought after in public relations, cultural institutions, corporate sectors, and technology fields.
The Classics program features intimate seminars led by experienced professors, appealing to dedicated scholars. The department provides three specialized tracks (detailed below) to accommodate varied academic interests. Students pursuing dual degrees thrive here, with law and medical schools recognizing the merit of combining Classics with other disciplines. Our supportive faculty fosters a welcoming environment committed to student success.
