The M.A. in Anthropology with a Sociocultural Specialization serves as foundational training for doctoral studies, requiring applicants to apply to both programs simultaneously. The graduate program does not admit students seeking solely an M.A. in Sociocultural Anthropology. Anthropology encompasses the comprehensive study of humanity across biological, sociocultural, and historical dimensions. Many UCSB undergraduates choose anthropology for its value in providing a well-rounded liberal arts education, regardless of professional aspirations in the field. Yet, the program equally supports students pursuing anthropology as a career path.
The anthropology major has three primary objectives: (1) to equip future professionals for graduate studies in anthropology, (2) to prepare students for careers in secondary education or social services, and (3) to offer behavioral science foundations for students seeking broad knowledge in either biological or social sciences.
