The Master of Arts in Anthropology with an Archaeology Specialization serves as a crucial stepping stone toward doctoral studies, requiring applicants to apply for both programs simultaneously. For those exclusively interested in earning an M.A. in Archaeology, applications should be directed to the Terminal M.A. program in North American Archaeology. Anthropology encompasses the comprehensive study of humanity, examining biological, sociocultural, and historical dimensions. Many UCSB undergraduates choose this major for its well-rounded liberal arts foundation, regardless of whether they plan to pursue anthropology professionally. That said, the curriculum also thoroughly prepares students with career-focused aspirations.
The anthropology major has three primary objectives: (1) to equip students for graduate studies and professional work in anthropology, (2) to prepare them for careers in secondary education or social work, and (3) to offer a behavioral studies foundation for students seeking a broad education in either biological or social sciences.
