The UC Santa Barbara Ethnomusicology Program offers foundational courses across three key domains: Regional Studies covering the Middle East, South Asia, Eastern Europe, American folk and popular music, Japan, Indonesia, and Mexico; Contemporary Issues exploring music anthropology, globalization, urban musical cultures, tourism, sound studies, and gender perspectives; and Methodological Approaches including ethnomusicological theory, field research techniques, tuning systems, and maqam traditions. Performance opportunities include the Middle East Ensemble, Indian Music Ensemble, Gamelan Ensemble, Gospel Choir, with occasional offerings like Polish Folk Ensemble, Appalachian Music Group, and Afro-Brazilian Performance Collective.
