The Climate and Environment Emphasis centers on examining Earth's climate system within the wider environmental framework, investigating historical, current, and projected transformations by utilizing evidence from terrestrial and marine archives. Key inquiries include: What historical climate shifts have occurred, and how do they relate to anthropogenic climate change? How do climatic conditions and surface environments mutually influence one another, and what roles have tectonic activity, carbon cycling, and ocean-atmosphere development played in environmental evolution? What methodologies exist for interpreting climatic and environmental records? Students develop expertise in diverse areas such as geochemical analysis, geophysical techniques, computational modeling, spatial reasoning, and understanding the social implications of ecological challenges.
